Information
The Angora rabbit's hollow chambered hair gives the best natural insulation.
It keeps the warmth of your body stable, which means that when you are outdoors
you do not feel the cold, however when you enter a heated room you will feel comfortable
and will not get overheated. For those who suffer from bone and joint pain due to changes
in the weather, wearing angora is very beneficial. Angora garments have exceptional
thermal
quality, being extremely warm and wonderfully soft against the skin. The fabric
also allows the skin to breath without becoming damp, thus preventing catching cold during
work in open air or on cold, windy days.

General Information

Angora rabbits have long been pets of kings and emperors.
They are believed to have originated in Turkey and were bred by French nobility.

Angora rabbits are known by three general breeds. Each breed having slightly
different hair quality:

The English angora rabbits have very fluffy ears called "furnishings".
The hair is quite fine and has very little guard hair.

The French angora rabbit's hair contains quite a bit of guard hair, however this
does not have to be removed before spinning as it's gives the finished yarn a very
fluffy quality.

The German angora rabbit was developed through selective breeding, resulting in
a rabbit with very high hair yields, which is strong enough for commercial processing.

Angora rabbits come in many colors, from pure white, peachy cream to black.
They shed their hair naturally, 3 to 4 a year. Depending on weather and other
environmental conditions, they may shed just the outer, longer layer or they
may shed it all, leaving only pink skin. The loose hair can be removed by
brushing or gently plucking or clipping with scissors or shears.

ANGORA RABBITS ARE NOT HURT IN ANY WAY BY THE HARVESTING
OR CLIPPING OF THEIR HAIR.

Because the angora rabbit has been specially bred for its long hair for many centuries,
they do not survive for long in the wild. Their hair gets tangled in the underbrush,
making them easy prey for predators. Their long coats also makes them prone to
woolblock, a condition where the shedding fur is ingested by the rabbit, making the
bunny quit ill.

Angora fiber is hollow, giving it insulating properties. Because it is about seven times
warmer than sheep's wool, it is usually blended with other fibers, such as wool, silk or
cotton. Angora fiber is quite clean, so it can be spun almost directly from the rabbit.
(A bit of hand teasing may be required to straighten the fiber before spinning).
The yarn is washed after spinning. It can also be carded with wool and then spun.
Core spinning is another good method for spinning angora.

Angora rabbits are loved for their exceptional fur and also for their personalities.
They make excellent pets and can be litterbox trained. Life with a rabbit can be amusing.

Good quality wool can be obtained only if the animals are well taken care of.
Ample room to move and good nutrition are the basis for high quality Angora hair
used for underwear.
